The Trans-Guard® EX product line from ABB's Hi-Tech® series comprises full-range, current-limiting capacitor fuses engineered for comprehensive overcurrent protection in both indoor and outdoor power capacitor bank applications. These fuses are specifically designed to interrupt both low- and high-level faults-up to 50,000 A symmetrical-within a single, compact fuse body. They feature extremely low total let-throughs to minimize energy released during fault conditions, protecting capacitor banks from damage. Their high melt values also increase surge tolerance, making them robust against transient inrush currents, especially during back-to-back switching scenarios.
A defining characteristic of the Trans-Guard EX fuse is its hermetically sealed construction, which eliminates gas expulsion, sound, and flying debris during operation. This sealed, non-expulsion design makes it ideal for use in confined installations such as metal-enclosed switchgear or pad-mounted banks. A visible blown fuse indicator enhances maintenance visibility by allowing easy detection of operated units. The patented internal damage sensor further improves operational safety and reliability by reducing the risk of internal failure following a damaging surge. Versions are available for both bushing and bus-mount configurations and can be coated with UV-resistant finishes for outdoor durability.
The HTEX22D040 has 5.5kV rated maximum voltage and a current rating of 40A. ABB recommends selecting a fuse with a current rating at least 1.5× the rated current of the capacitor to account for harmonics, tolerances, and overvoltage. This robust specification makes the Trans-Guard EX line suitable for use in harmonic filter banks, metal-enclosed switchgear, and open rack-mounted capacitor systems across utility and industrial sectors.
